In honor of Mother’s Day, Melanie Burk shares a sweet design to remind us that even when it’s hard, being a woman is a beautiful thing.
“With motherhood coming up this Sunday, we’ve been thinking about what it means to be a mother, and about all of the wonderful women around us. Oftentimes mother’s day can be a hard day for many women-with wishes to have children, or more children, or missing children, or to be married, or have a better marriage… quite simply, it can become a day of wishes and heartache.
Being a woman is hard, and it’s easy for this to become a day of wishing. I know I am constantly wishing to be better, and learning to be gentle with myself is a constant lesson.. So to all of you women-today we want to recognize you and your goodness! No matter your struggles, disappointments, yearnings, thank you for being a force for good and a pillar of strength to those around you. You do more good than you know!
Happy day of love to all of you women! ”

If you couldn’t tell by now, my mind is constantly thinking all things Caribbean and tropical. I am happiest in the sunshine and where the earth is lush and the background noise is the sound of the Sea. Therefore, I try my best to bring that atmosphere into my home. I’m about to share with you one of my absolute favorite treasures – Sea Fans! They are tropical, the composition is delicate and they are chic, interesting and FANtastic!
My favorite way to display sea fans as artwork is to frame it with a white background and a gold or white frame to keep it clean and fresh (see top right) If you find a white or cream sea fan it’s fun to choose a black background for a dramatic effect that highlights all of the details of the sea fan (see top left). You can find sea fans all over the internet and especially on Etsy for decent prices! Have fun exploring and finding your tropical treasures!”

While I love a heavy dose of color to brighten any beautiful space, I also adore a regal mix of black, white and gold to achieve a certain level of refinement. Before I rounded up my favorite projects, spaces and things, I started with inspiration from Caitlin’s new rug collection, her Black Spotted Rug, whose versatility is both oh-so-playful and chic. Adding an element of contrast is great for rounding out any look and gold not only reigns supreme, but has stood the true test of time. Right now, I’m happy it’s here to stay.
